Boston Dynamics
Boston Dynamics is a robotics company known for Spot and Atlas, and is owned by Hyundai Motor Group.
Boston Dynamics is a robotics company famous for its quadrupedal robot dog Spot and humanoid robot Atlas. It started at MIT in the U.S., went through Google and Softbank, and currently has Hyundai Motor Group as its largest shareholder. This is a company that has imprinted the current state of robotics technology around the world with videos of robots climbing stairs and doing somersaults.
It has maintained the world's highest level of robot balance control and movement technology for decades, and recently entered the commercial humanoid competition by developing a new hydraulic system, Atlas, into an electric drive system. It is receiving attention again in the trend of combining generative AI with robot brains.
However, although it is considered the best in technology demonstrations, it is taking a long time to create a profitable mass-market product. Competition from emerging humanoid companies such as Tesla and Figure is also intensifying.
✅ Strengths
- It has maintained the world's highest level in robot balance control and walking technology for decades
- It has proven products on sale, such as the robot dog Spot
- It is backed by the capital and manufacturing capabilities of Hyundai Motor Group
⚠️ Limits
- There is an evaluation that profitable commercialization is slow compared to the brilliant technology
- There is a strong pursuit by emerging AI-centered robot companies such as Tesla and Figure
- The humanoid market itself is still in its infancy, so demand is uncertain.
